Day of the Dead 2025 in Mexico City: Traditions, Parades & Unique Local Experiences đŸ”

The Spirit of Day of the Dead in Mexico City

Every autumn, Mexico City becomes a living altar. Streets bloom with cempasĂșchil flowers, candles flicker in every corner, and the air fills with the scent of copal and sweet bread. DĂa de Muertos —a celebration recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage— invites locals and visitors to honor those who have passed while celebrating the joy of being alive.

In 2025, the city will once again glow with processions, art, and music that blend ancient rituals with modern creativity. From the colorful parades downtown to the candlelit cemeteries in Mixquic, here’s everything you can experience.

🎭 Day of the Dead Parade 2025 — November 1

This year’s theme, “Paisaje Vivo: El Arte Drag y la Lucha Libre”, promises one of the most exciting parades yet —a celebration of expression, diversity, and identity. Floats, drag performers, and luchadores will fill the streets from Puerta de los Leones in Chapultepec to the Zócalo.

🌙 Mixquic: Where Tradition Comes Alive

South of Mexico City, the town of Mixquic holds one of the country’s most authentic DĂa de Muertos celebrations. From November 1 to 2, families transform the local cemetery into a glowing sanctuary of candles and cempasĂșchil flowers.

Throughout the night, people gather by the graves of their loved ones, sharing food, music, and stories —a moving expression of love and remembrance.

However, because of its growing popularity, Mixquic can get extremely crowded during these dates, which sometimes makes it difficult to fully experience the calm and intimacy that define this tradition.
